ESTACADA AREA ARTS COMMISSION MEETING

Wed., July 9, 2008

City Council Chambers

Commissioners present:  Am, Gloria, Rob, Jami, Janette, Kathleen.

Commissioners absent:  Pete.   Welcome Pete!

Guests: Thea Kuziemski and Callie Vandewiele.

Meeting called to order: 6:35 pm

Additions to agenda:  None

Approval of May and June minutes: passed.

Financial Statement/Budget:  Kathleen passed out the current financial statement.  At present, the balance of the EAAC account is $1,892.20 and the Summer Celebration balance is $15,547.12.

Mail:  Gloria passed around some correspondence the commission received.

Thank you cards:   None at this time.  Gloria will send thank you’s to the sponsors of the Summer Celebration.

Public Input:   Callie Vandewiele presented her “Plastic Impact” art project which she would like to implement at the 2008 Summer Celebration.  She is the creator of this idea and has implemented it prior through the Pacific University Art Club.  She would like to string used plastic grocery bags which are tied together – the amount to the same number of people living in Estacada – and hung high around a group of trees for example.  The intent is to show the public that it uses too many plastic bags.  The message is to use the re-useable cloth bags or recycled paper bags.   She would like the EAAC’s permission.  It was voted on and passed that the EAAC likes the idea and supports it; however, Callie will have to get permission from the City to put it on City property.  The project will only be up for one day.

NEW BUSINESS:

Elections:  Gloria was unanimously re-elected in the Chairman position.  Rob was voted vice-chair; Jami – secretary; and Kathleen re-elected as treasurer.

Chamber Mural:  Rob and the Chamber would like to see a mural on the back wall of the new chamber office.  Rob asked Jami and Am to see if any of the artists from the gallery would be interested.  They will bring it up at the next gallery meeting and get back to Rob.

OLD BUSINESS:

Arts and Culture Series:  Several of the commissioners read the Estacada Together minutes distributed recently and noticed that they plan on sponsoring the spring PAGE play and a Music Crawl this upcoming fall.  The commission agreed there needs to be a clearer understanding of Estacada Together’s role in presenting events as well as the commission’s.  It was decided to invite them to our fall retreat to discuss this situation so our roles are clearly defined before the commission creates the A&C series for 2009.

Mural Art Walk:  Kathleen volunteered to take over this project.  Gloria reported that Angel had not yet brought the original back and she will contact her to remind her.

Summer Celebration update:   Things are going along smoothly.  Jami realized the majority of the backpacks must be in storage so she’ll ask one of the SC committee members to retrieve them for the Information Booth.  She is also updating all the information for the booth and will bring both boxes to Janette who is going to be in charge of the booth this year.

The posters are done and Jami and Gloria went to Oregon City to hang today.  Jami will send out reminders to those who volunteered to put them up.  They are being stored at The Spiral Gallery for convenience of pick up.

Jami used a program on the internet that Am told her about to translate the poster into Spanish for our Latino friends.  She and Gloria took it to Cisco Kid and had someone read it to see if it made sense – it was great.  She’ll hang these as well at different locations in town.

Gloria will be visiting the local businesses again this year to see if they’d like to offer coupons or special during the SC weekend.  Jami will again create the “coupon booklet” as well.

Jami updated/wrote all the articles for the SC insert in the Estacada Newspaper.  Jane edited them.  As per Lisa at the paper, the insert should be ready for proof-reading by the 16th.  It won’t be coming out, however, until the 23rd this year.  That was a disappointment, and Jane and Jami tried to get them to publish earlier, but it was already set up that way.  Jami will make sure they do it earlier next year.

Fundraising:   Am reported that the benches are coming right along and she, as well as Jami, have reminded the artists of the deadline.  Jami will give the artists receipts for these donations as well.  Jami will also send out yet another plea for donation of art from local artists for the auction.

Meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Jami Berry, Secretary
